DFU Mode

How to enter devices into DFU mode — steps for popular brands and models.

DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode is the deepest type of restore for Apple devices, allowing them to interface with iTunes or Finder without loading the operating system or bootloader. It is used for restoring unresponsive devices, updating firmware, or downgrading iOS, typically resulting in a black screen.

Key Aspects of DFU Mode:

  • Purpose: Primarily for fixing severe software issues (e.g., failed jailbreaks, stuck at logo) or upgrading/downgrading firmware.

  • Distinction: Unlike recovery mode, which shows a logo and asks to connect to iTunes, DFU mode keeps the screen completely black.

  • Data Loss: Performing a DFU restore will erase all user data.

  • Compatibility: Applicable to iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers.
